Completed in 1952, Bird S. Coler Memorial Hospital was, like its sister institution Goldwater Hospital on the island's south end, devoted to the treatment of chronic illnesses. Although perhaps not as architecturally interesting as Goldwater, Coler Hospital was just as dedicated to serving its community.
In 1996, the two institutions merged to form Coler-Goldwater Memorial Hospital focused on long-term patients, including para- and quadriplegics, and dementia and Alzheimer's patients. As of December 2013, The Coler Hospital campus is the only remaining campus in operation on the island.
